Our cottages and suites range from one- to two-bedroom units. Each has its own personality and original décor. Views from the cottages vary and include ocean views as well as pool views. However, they all afford a view of the lushly landscaped grounds featuring aromatic jasmine, gardenia, native trees, a variety of tropical plants and colorful bougainvillea-a trademark of Drop Anchor. All of this is located under a canopy of several coconut palms.

All bathrooms have colorful, fifties-style tile, and some cottages have soaking tubs as well as shower stalls. Kitchens are stacked with the necessary utensils for everyday life. Guests may enjoy air conditioning and ceiling fans, in addition to the ocean breezes. All rooms have stocked mini refrigerators and coffee makers, with suites also offering full kitchens and/or kitchenettes. Nearby laundry facilities for your personal use will soon be available. As a part of the current Drop Anchor renovation, a majority of the cottages will have plantation-style porches, colorful Bahama shutters and Plantation theme exteriors and interiors.

The main channel, marked with red and green markers, a few hundreds yards off shore, is the Intracoastal Waterway, which runs from Key West to Maine. According to federal and state officials, as of Saturday, there are no impacts forecast for at least the next 72 hours to any part of the state of Florida and a minimum of 10 days for the Keys, if not longer.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) models, prepared through Monday, show the oil slick still positioned to the north of the Gulf’s Loop Current.

As of Saturday, according to the Florida Office of Emergency Management, the southern edge of the oil slick was estimated to be about 35 miles to the north of the loop current.

The Gulf Loop Current is a clockwise current that carries water from the Yucatan Channel north into the Gulf of Mexico, then back down south off Florida’s west coast, past the Dry Tortugas and intersecting into the Gulf Stream.

In the Transocean/BP spill, the current plays a crucial role because of concerns if oil gets into the Loop Current, it could be swept to the south, possibly into or around the Keys and possibly carried by the Gulf Stream to other areas of Florida and the U.S. east coast.

If oil enters the current, the travel time for it to get to the Dry Tortugas vicinity should be 10 to 14 days, oceanographers say. The Tortugas begin about 70 miles to the west of Key West.

Currently, there are no advisories recommending against travel to the Florida Keys or any other precautions advising not to engage in fishing, diving, swimming or other water sports. Florida Keys-waters seafood is safe to eat.

Federal, state and local environmental and emergency management agencies have met several times to review and tweak mitigation strategies if a response to an oil threat is required for the Keys.

Although NOAA officials continue to research potential impacts, any oil reaching Keys waters would likely be physically different than it is in northern Gulf waters.

That means it would be highly unlikely that large “rivers” of oil would impact the Keys. More likely, experts said, the impacts would be in the form of tar balls. While arrival of oil in any form is unacceptable, it seems those impacts would be less harmful to the environment and likely easier to mitigate.

All threats to the Keys will likely cease once the oil leaks, 5,000 feet on the bottom of the sea, are plugged.

If you’re in the mood to explore, you’ll have no shortage of options. The Florida Keys are known for superb scuba diving, snorkeling and deep sea fishing, and the resort offers daily trips to Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary and the wreck of the Adolphus Busch. You can even arrange your certification during your stay; there are several PADI instructors on the island. If you’re sailing or yachting through Florida Keys, Little Palm Island marina is the ideal place to dock for a few days. A friendly beacon to seafarers, the resort offers all the creature comforts and island charm you’d hope to find. Enjoy world-class cuisine at the resort’s dining room, body treatments for the ocean-weary at SpaTerre, beach for stretching out in the sun, and postcard-perfect island beauty.

Little Palm Island in the Florida Keys can be found at Latitude 24°37.11, Longitude 81°24.42, just four nautical miles north of Looe Key Light (marker 24). The Loran coordinates are 13981.6 and 43530.5 at Flashing Red #2, which marks the entrance to Newfound Harbor.

Marina slips will accommodate vessels up to 120 feet in length with a draft up to six feet, in addition to 575 feet of dock space bordering a protected lagoon, ideal for smaller boats. You will have 50 or 30 amp electricity service, a water allowance of one gallon per foot each day, and full use of the island’s recreational facilities, including pool, snorkeling and fishing gear. You may also enjoy the superlative offerings of the resort’s dining room and spa.

Deposit & Payments A two-night advance deposit is required to confirm your reservation. When reserving a package, a 50-percent deposit is required.

Cancellation & Early Departure Because of our limited size, cancellations affect us greatly. Therefore, we adhere to a very strict cancellation policy. Cancellations and changes made 15 days prior to arrival or more will result in a $100 service charge. (Beginning January 1, 2008 cancellations will result in a $100 service charge, per night cancelled) Cancellations and changes made 14 days prior to arrival or less will result in the forfeiture of your two night advance deposit (when reserving a package the entire advance deposit is non-refundable.) All deposits are non-transferable to alternate dates, however you are welcome to send someone else in your place. Should it be necessary for you to depart earlier than your confirmed date, you will be responsible for the full amount of your intended stay. If you cancel your reservation, be sure to note your cancellation number for your records.

We provide hourly motor yacht service to the Island from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Should you need service before or after this time, you may incur a Captain’s fee. Check with our staff for scheduling and cost information. Please call us in advance to advise of your estimated time of arrival so that we may alert our Captain.

Dining Plan Due to the remoteness of our Island, we recommend our Full Meal Plan which includes breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. Surcharges may apply on some special menu items, wine maker’s dinners and on holiday menus. Once you select a meal plan, we ask that you remain on the same plan for the duration of your stay. We encourage you to make dinner reservations in advance of your stay by calling 305-872-2551.

We consider all of our suites non-smoking. Guests are welcome to smoke on the outdoor verandah of their suite. There is no smoking in the Dining Room.

We do not permit children under the age of 16 on the Island.

We do not permit personal coolers on the Island. All food and beverage consumed in public areas, must be purchased from Little Palm Island.

We do not permit pets on the Island.

To enhance your experience, telephones and televisions are intentionally absent from our suites. Each suite is equipped with a phone that connects to several in-house island amenities. WI-FI access is available in the Great Room.

Your suite rate is subject to 11.5-percent tax. Tipping our staff during your stay is not necessary, nor expected. In lieu of tipping, a 10-percent service charge will be added to your suite or dockage rate. All a la carte food and alcoholic beverages are subject to 7.5-percent tax and 20-percent service.

Dress on the Island is casual, however when in the Dining Room gentleman are asked to wear a collared shirt. Swimsuits are not allowed in the Dining Room and for your safety, shoes are required.

At first glimpse from your motor yacht transfer, Little Palm Island appears, floating like a brilliant mirage, in the Florida Straits. Spa Scheduling
To secure your desired time, make your spa reservation early. All spa services can be billed to your room or paid for with a major credit card. If you would like to request a particular therapist, please let us know when you book your spa appointment.

Spa Cancellation Policy
To cancel without charge, please give us four hours’ notice. You will be charged the full price of your spa service if you cancel within four hours of your scheduled time or fail to show up. Rescheduling your appointment within four hours of your scheduled time will result in a 50% charge of its value. We will make every attempt to fill your vacant appointment time, and will not charge you if we are able to do so.

Upon Arriving
Please arrive 5 to 10 minutes prior to your spa appointment time. Feel free to arrive in your bathrobe and sandals, or in whatever is comfortable.

Punctuality
If you arrive late for your spa service, your treatment will be modified. All spa treatments end on time so that the next guest will not be inconvenienced.

Our goal was to try and recreate what storms and development have erased and share with you what we think was the nicest period of Keys history – before the invasion of concrete and high-rises; of noise, neon signs and other kinds of pollution.

Our beachfront homes could have had a nicer “ocean view” like those so prized by many resorts. However our building philosophy was to stay under the tree canopy in order to be as discrete as possible from boating or ocean approach and to give our guests ample privacy on the beach.

The Moorings is the place where the simplest of things can become of great value. You can walk, swim, or just sit on your porch for hours – watching nature take her course.

Peace and quiet is becoming scarce… and we are trying to preserve it.

The original Moorings was built in 1936 as a private estate. It consisted of several dwellings; one of them was known as the Main House, the others were its dependencies and guesthouse.

In the 60’s, Hurricane Donna devastated Islamorada. Afterwards, the property was purchased by Mr. Ralph Edsell, Sr., who transformed it into a small resort. The Main House was divided into two apartments and another house was built raising the number of accommodations to five.

In 1988, The Moorings was purchased by the present owner and underwent an extensive face-lift and remodeling. It reopened in 1989 under the same name.

In 1989, a piece of land north of The Moorings was the subject of a development scheme which would have consisted of 200 oceanfront units. After a long battle, The Moorings was able to purchase the land as well as an adjacent and once disruptive industrial park.

After a year of careful planning, construction plans began to add 14 new cottages. In order to create a sense of harmony, the new cottage architecture does not differ too much from that of the original ones.

The Moorings has been built around the existing landscape, enhancing what nature has provided rather than adapting nature to us. We worked with what was there as much as possible and we will continue to work to protect the environment.
